Benson came from STK at the heyday of tape market supremacy. He had been with the firm for more than 19 years and was vice president and general manager of its tape division when it was bought by Sun in 2005. Benson supervised the commercial activities that resulted to StorageTek's tape market supremacy throughout the 1990s and into 2000-2005 with the PowderHorn, SL8500, and 9840/9940/T10000 tape drives. Following SUN's purchase of STK, he became senior vice president of global storage, tape, and disk divisions, overseeing the multibillion-dollar storage industry.
