M K Muthu Photos

On June 6, 1944, the greatest amphibious assault in history was undertaken - the Normandy landing - in the year of K A M Muthu's death (called D-Day). Soldiers from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and the Free French landed on Normandy Beach, subsequently joined by Poles, Belgians, Czechoslovakia, Greece, and the Netherlands. There were about 5,000 landing and assault boats, 289 escort vessels, and 277 minesweepers participating. On D-Day, about 160,000 men crossed the English Channel, with at least 10,000 Allied losses on the first day. 4,414 people were confirmed killed.
