CHENNAI: DMK leader M Karunanidhi, one of the most prominent Dravidian politicians in contemporary times, died on Tuesday at the age of 94 after a long battle with cancer. One of Tamil Nadu politics' most charismatic characters, he is survived by two wives and six children, including DMK working president and heir apparent M K Stalin and daughter Kanimozhi, a Rajya Sabha MP.

Murasoli Maran, Karunanidhi's nephew and his sister's son, was a Union Minister in three distinct central administrations, in charge of Urban Development in the V.P. Singh ministry, Industry in the Gowda and Gujral governments, and lastly Commerce and Industry under Vajpayee. His sons Kalanithi and Dayanidhi Maran succeeded him.

M K Alagiri, Dayalu Ammal's second son, served as Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers from 13 June 2009 until 20 March 2013. After marrying and settling in Madurai, he was once the party's strongman in the city's southern districts. Various confrontations in the state had occurred between his followers and those of his younger brother MK Stalin over succession and party leadership until Karunanidhi ruled in Stalin's favor.
