Childhood [Correction] Fannie Rodman (Downs) and Cyril Baldwin Hartman raised Hartman in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. [1] He is of German ancestry. Hartman attended Mount Hermon School (now Northfield Mount Hermon) and was a high school baseball prospect. He passed down a baseball scholarship to attend Duke University, where he studied in economics and joined the Sigma Chi fraternity and the Alpha Kappa Psi business fraternity. Following graduation, he spent three years on active service as an officer in the United States Air Force's Strategic Air Command. He worked as a supply officer at Dow AFB in Bangor, Maine, and played Curly in local musicals, including Oklahoma! David spent the summer of 1960 at the Surflight Summer Theatre in Beach Haven, New Jersey, performing in Mister Roberts, South Pacific, and Kismet.

The show, also titled And the Winners Are, included interviews with Tom Hanks, Nicole Kidman, Clint Eastwood, Jack Nicholson, Paul Newman, and Tom Cruise. The show, which was compiled from his KCBS and KNBC interviews going back to the 1970s, debuted on Amazon Prime in June 2019.
